​​No one is for sure on how Lucky Luciano got the name "Lucky" most assume it was that Luciano survived a beating by 3 men and survived throat slash only because Luciano would not work for another mobster. In the 1920's Lucky left the Masseria gang and started work for Arnold "the Brain" Rothstein the gambler. Prohibition was starting to be a big deal so Rothstein started teaching Luciano on the bootlegging operation  Bootlegging is the process of making illegal alcohol and selling it to people that were wealthy enough to buy it.  1925 came rolling around and Luciano was grossing $12 million a year, if Luciano was making that today it would be around $135 million a year it today's economy.
